I write in a variety of genres, including orchestral, chamber ensemble, choral, or whatever the commission requires.
Fantasy on an Appalachian Carol
Enchanting winter imagery from the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains is set to Stephen Main’s composition, Fantasy on an Appalachian Carol, based on the old Appalachian tune, I Wonder as I Wander.
Blessed Be That Maid Mary
Blessed Be That Maid Mary is from the Christmas cantata, For All This Night, composed and orchestrated by Stephen Main. Performed here by the Piedmont Community Church Choir and Festival Orchestra. Soprano soloist: Christa Pfeiffer.
Originally scored for film, Angela’s Theme is a haunting piece for piano and strings.
The Darkest Midnight in December
An original, prize-winning carol for SATB choir and celesta, written for the group VocalEssence (Philip Brunelle, director). The Minneapolis Star-Tribune called it an “evocative setting that captures the mystery of the season.” This carol was broadcast in 2008 on National Public Radio, and is published by Walton Music Co.
Be Still, My Soul
Based on the much-loved hymn of Sibelius, this a cappella arrangement begins with a straightforward presentation of the tune and then proceeds to an extended six-part treatment with long, flowing lines over a baritone solo. The final section includes a descant for solo soprano or small group. Be still, my soul is published by Roger Dean/Lorenz, Inc.
